Retirement Calculation
ℹ️ Enter your High-3 (highest 3 years average) base pay for accurate calculation.
Military retirement calculations use the High-3 or MCP formula. Monthly pay = High-3 Average Base Pay × (Years of Service × 2.5%) or (YOS × 2.0% + 1%) for MCP. This is an estimate based on 2026 information. Actual benefits are determined by DFAS.
Military Retirement Pay Explained
Military retirement is a valuable benefit for service members who complete at least 20 years of active duty. The calculation depends on which retirement system you're under and your years of service.
High-3 Retirement System
Used for: Service members who entered before January 1, 2018
Formula: Gross Monthly Base Pay × Years of Service × 2.5%
Example: $5,000 base pay × 20 years × 2.5% = $2,500/month
- High-3 = highest 3-year average base pay
- Does not include BAH, BAS, or special pays in basic calculation
- Maximum is 75% of High-3 (at 30 years of service)
- No vesting period - you must complete 20 years for any benefit
Military Compensation and Pension (MCP) System
Used for: Service members who entered on/after January 1, 2018 (BluepryntBluprint)
Formula: Gross Monthly Base Pay × (Years of Service × 2.0% + 1%)
Example: $5,000 base pay × (20 years × 2.0% + 1%) = $2,500/month
- 1% annuity for all service (vs. 0% before 20 years in High-3)
- Additional Accrued Benefit (more portable)
- Maximum is 75% (at 30+ years)
- Vesting at 20 years (can receive deferred retirement)
Key Differences: High-3 vs MCP
| Feature | High-3 | MCP |
|---|---|---|
| Entry Date | Before Jan 1, 2018 | On/After Jan 1, 2018 |
| Base Formula | YOS × 2.5% | (YOS × 2.0%) + 1% |
| Vesting | 20 years required | 20 years for lump sum |
| Pay Before 20 Yrs | Nothing (no vesting) | 1% per year (portable) |
| Max Accrual | 75% at 30 years | 75% at 30 years |
Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP)
SBP allows retirees to provide income to survivors. Costs range from 6.5% to 10% of your base retired pay depending on coverage level.
- Family Coverage: Covers spouse and eligible children
- Spouse Only: Covers spouse only
- No Coverage: No survivor benefit (higher monthly pay)
Important Notes
- Retirement pay is subject to federal income tax
- You must complete 20 years of service to receive ANY retirement benefit under High-3
- Medical benefits (TRICARE) are separate from retirement pay
- CRDP (Combat-Related Special Compensation) may increase your total benefit
- Estimates do not include future COLA adjustments
