Our Mission

To empower veterans with accurate, accessible tools and information to understand their VA disability compensation and make informed decisions about their benefits.

VA Math Calculator was created by veterans, for veterans. We understand that navigating VA disability benefits can be confusing, especially when it comes to understanding how the VA combines multiple disability ratings into a single combined rating. Our mission is to make this process transparent and accessible to everyone.

Understanding VA Math

Many veterans are surprised to learn that the VA doesn't simply add up their disability percentages. Instead, the VA uses a method called "VA Math" to combine ratings in a way that acknowledges that a veteran can't be more than 100% disabled.

How VA Math Works:

  1. Start with the highest disability rating
  2. Apply the next highest rating to what remains of the "non-disabled" veteran
  3. Continue with each rating in descending order
  4. Round the final combined rating to the nearest 10%

Example: A veteran with ratings of 50%, 30%, and 10% would be calculated as:

This is why using our calculator is helpful—it automatically performs these calculations so you don't have to do the math manually.

About Disability Ratings

The VA rates disabilities on a scale of 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, 90%, and 100%. These ratings are determined by VA Regional Offices based on:

Important Note: Your disability rating determines both your monthly compensation amount and your eligibility for additional benefits. Veterans rated 30% or higher receive additional compensation for dependents (spouse, children, parents).

2026 VA Disability Compensation

The VA adjusts disability compensation rates annually based on the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA). The 2026 rates became effective December 1, 2025, and include a 2.8% increase over 2025 rates.

2026 VA Compensation Examples (Veteran with no dependents):

Veterans rated 30% or higher also receive additional monthly compensation for qualifying dependents. The amounts vary by rating and family status.
